Facial paralysis is a condition in which the muscles on one side of the face become weak or paralyzed, resulting in difficulty smiling, closing the eye, or raising the eyebrow on the affected side. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including nerve damage, viral infections, brain tumors, and stroke.
In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), facial paralysis is often seen as a result of imbalances in the body’s qi (vital energy) and blood, or an accumulation of toxins in the body. The underlying cause of the imbalance or toxin accumulation will determine the specific treatment approach used in TCM.
To treat facial paralysis in TCM, a practitioner may use a combination of techniques, including acupuncture, herbal remedies, and Remedial massage. Acupuncture is believed to help regulate the flow of qi and blood, reducing symptoms such as muscle weakness and improving overall function of the affected facial muscles. Herbal remedies may include the use of herbs such as angelica root, ligusticum, and cinnamon bark, which are thought to have a positive effect on blood circulation and muscle function. Dietary changes may include recommendations to increase the consumption of foods that are nourishing and warm, such as meats and cooked vegetables, and to reduce the consumption of foods that are cold or damp, such as raw vegetables and cold drinks.
