Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection that causes a painful rash and blisters on the skin. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person has had chickenpox, the virus can remain dormant in their body and reactivate later in life, causing shingles.
In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), shingles is often seen as a result of imbalances in the body’s qi (vital energy) and blood. This imbalance can be caused by a variety of factors, including stress, a weakened immune system, and hormonal imbalances.
To treat shingles in TCM, a practitioner may use a combination of techniques, including acupuncture, herbal remedies, and dietary changes. Acupuncture is believed to help regulate the flow of qi and blood, reducing symptoms such as pain and inflammation. Herbal remedies may include the use of herbs such as licorice, dandelion, and chamomile, which are thought to have a positive effect on the immune system and overall well-being. Dietary changes may include recommendations to increase the consumption of foods that are nourishing and cooling, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and to reduce the consumption of foods that are irritants or allergenic, such as dairy products, gluten, and soy.
