Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age and is characterized by the growth of cysts on the ovaries. The exact cause of PCOS is not well understood, but it is believed to be related to imbalances in hormones, particularly a high level of androgens (male hormones) and an increased level of insulin resistance. Other factors that can contribute to the development of PCOS include genetics, obesity, and stress.
In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), PCOS is often seen as a result of imbalances in the body’s qi (vital energy) and blood. This imbalance can lead to a range of symptoms, including irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, and hirsutism (excess hair growth).
To treat PCOS in TCM, a practitioner may use a combination of techniques, including acupuncture, herbal remedies, and dietary changes. Acupuncture is believed to help regulate the flow of qi and blood, reducing symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles and hirsutism. Herbal remedies may include the use of herbs such as angelica, ginseng, and licorice, which are thought to have a positive effect on overall health and hormonal balance. Dietary changes may include recommendations to increase the consumption of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and lean protein, and to reduce the consumption of sugar, processed foods, and high-fat foods.
